The TCU Horned Frogs football team is the intercollegiate football team of Texas Christian University (TCU). The Horned Frogs compete in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States.
Since 2012, the Horned Frogs have been a member of the Big 12 Conference. Prior to joining the Big 12, TCU competed in the Mountain West Conference, winning conference championships in 2005 and 2009.
TCU has produced two Heisman Trophy winners: Davey O’Brien in 1938 and Billy Cannon in 1959. TCU has had eight former players inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and thirteen former players inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
TCU Football History
TCU began playing football in 1896 and claims national championships in 1935 and 1938. The Horned Frogs have also participated in 22 bowl games, winning 15 of them, including 4 major bowl victories: the Rose Bowl (1935), the Orange Bowl (1938), the Cotton Bowl Classic (1939), and the Fiesta Bowl (2010).
TCU’s first year of football was in 1896; its first official game was on October 13 of that year, a 16–0 victory over Add-Ran Male & Female College. Two years later, the university began competing as a member of the Southwest Conference. As a private school for its first 34 years of existence, TCU could not participate in a bowl game until the 1932 season.
TCU joined the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA) in 1908 and went independent in 1929. Between those two events, however, TCU won seven conference championships and 13 Southwest Conference championships while it was a member of the MVIAA and SWC.
In 1922, TCU defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College 72–6, setting what is still the modern-day record for the most points scored by one team in a single game. The Horned Frogs also set an NCAA record by averaging 58.3 points per game in that same season.
